Big fourth quarter carries girls basketball past Whiteland

The New Palestine girls basketball team found itself tied going into the fourth quarter Saturday at Whiteland. But led by Kendra Moore, who hit three straight 3-pointers, the Dragons pulled away to a 49-35 road victory over the Warriors. Moore scored a career-high 19 points, tallying 13 in the final quarter. She hit four triples in the contest. With the game tied at 28-28 going into the final frame, Sadey Hughbanks hit a shot, and then Moore hit three straight 3-pointers to put the Dragons on top. Moore later hit a basket to help extend the lead, while the Dragons put the game away at the line. They were 8-for-12 from the stripe in the final quarter. Hughbanks hit five free throws and scored seven of her 11 points in the final frame. The Dragons got off to a hot start, opening with a Haven Flagle 3-pointer and basket. Flagle, Moore and Hughbanks all hit triples and Brooklyn Crim added a three-point play in the opening frame, leading the Dragons to a 14-6 lead after one. Whiteland began to claw back in the second, holding the Dragons to seven points - a triple by Gabbie Brown and two baskets by Crim - and cutting the lead to 21-16 at the break. The Warriors then held the Dragons to one third-quarter field goal - a basket by Moore. but 5-of-8 free throw shooting kept the Dragons in contact as the teams entered the final frame tied. In addition to Moore's career-high game, Hughbanks tallied 11 points. Crim scored nine, Flagle five, Brown four and McKenzie Hacker one. The Dragons are now 7-1 on the season. They next play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at New Castle in a varsity-only contest.
