The New Palestine girls basketball team struggled offensively Tuesday in a 47-33 loss to Shelbyville. The Dragons had a solid start, as Haven Flagle, Kendra Moore and Sawyor Murdick all hit first-quarter 3-pointers, but the teams were tied 11-11 after a period. After Murdick hit a shot in the early part of the second quarter, the Dragons would hit just one field goal - a three-point play by Sadey Hughbanks late in the third - over the next 19 minutes of game time. Sadey Hughbanks hit 5-of-7 from the line in the second quarter to provide the Dragons' offense, but NP trailed 27-18 at the break after giving up four 3-pointers to the Golden Bears in the quarter and six in the half. In the second half, the Dragons' defense clamped down. NP held Shelbyville to just two second-half field goals, but couldn't cut into the lead because of their own scoring struggles. Hughbanks tallied all four of the Dragons' third-quarter points as NP fell behind 36-22 going into the final frame. In the fourth quarter, Moore scored two late baskets and tallied five of her eight points. Ally White scored four points, but the Dragons were unable to get the deficit inside double figures. Hughbanks talled 11 points for the Dragons. Moore scored eight. Murdick had five points and White four. Flagle scored three and Gabbie Brown two. The Dragons are now 9-2 and 2-1 in conference play. They next play Friday at home against Greenfield-Central.
