Boys swim wins Warren Central Invitational, girls second

The New Palestine boys swimming and diving team won Saturday's Warren Central Warrior Invitational. The Dragons tallied 444 points, finishing ahead of second-place Warren Central (309.5) and third-place Heritage Christian (279) in an 11-team field. The Dragons girls finished a close second to Cathedral, which scored 377 points. NP had 367. Heritage Christian was third with 248 in a 12-team field. The Dragons boys won six events, including all three relays. Reese Cox, Blake Hurst, Jake Myers and Jalen Thompson won the 200 medley relay in 1:49.63. Sam Dobbins, Hurst, Luke Bartusek and Myers won the 200 free relay in 1:38.83. Max Watson, Parker Hurst, Dobbins and Thompson won the 400 free relay in 3:43.22. Cox led a 1-2 finish in the 100 backstroke, winning in 1:01.28, with Dobbins second (1:02.38) and Bartusek sixth. In the 100 freestyle, Thompson won in 53.99. Watson was fourth and Jakob Dillon sixth. In the 100 breaststroke, Hurst won in 1:07.93, with Tyler Schmidt fourth and Landon Parks sixth. Thompson was second (24.01) and Myers third (24.16) in the 50 freestyle. In the 200 IM, Cox was third (2:15.45) and Blake Hurst fourth. Myers was third in the 100 butterfly (59.57) and Dobbins sixth. In the 200 free, Watson was fourth and Parker Hurst fifth. The Dragons also had two other fifth-place finishes - Hudson Hughes in diving and Parker Hurst in the 500 free. The Dragons girls were led by three second-place finishes. Isabelle Tull was runner-up in diving (358.65). In the 100 backstroke, Ireland Armstrong was second in 1:09.40, with Gwen Melby third (1:13.52) and Arianna Tull fifth. Lillie Abernathy was second in the 200 IM (2:31.58), with Piper Schaefer sixth and Ellie Ragsdale eighth. Abernathy had a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.79), with Schaefer fifth. Armstrong was fourth in the 200 free, with Melby sixth and Isabelle Singer seventh. Ragsdale was sixth in the 100 butterfly, while Isabelle Tull was eighth in the 50 freestyle. The Dragons had two third-place relay finishes. Arianna Tull, Schaefer, Abernathy and Armstrong were third in the 200 medley relay in 2:07.53. Isabelle Tull, Jozlynn Hart, Armstrong and Abernathy were third in the 200 free relay (1:54.21). Ansley Tucker, Hart, Melby and Schaefer were fourth in the 400 free relay. The Dragons girls concluded their regular season in this invitational and next compete Feb. 5-7 in the sectional at NPHS. The boys have one regular season meet remaining, a triangular meet Feb. 2 at Greenwood against the host Woodmen and Roncalli.
