Baseball falls on late rally

The New Palestine baseball team took a two-run lead into the seventh inning, but a combination of walks and two-out hits allowed host Pendleton Heights to rally and beat the Dragons 3-2. The Dragons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, as Gavin Neal and Jacob Morris led off with singles and Marshall Giant drove in a run with a one-out single. Another walk to Haydon Mills loaded the bases, but the Dragons were unable to add on. Meanwhile, pitcher Holden Hughes was dealing. He had to pitch out of a bases-loaded jam in the third, but did so with a strikeout. The Dragons added a run in the seventh when Colin Workman drew a leadoff walk and scored on Isaac Gauthier's two-out double. It appeared to be enough, but PH was able to rally, loading the bases with one out on two walks and a hit batter. A bases-loaded walk brought home one run. A single to right tied the game. Another bases-loaded walk gave the Arabians the victory. Hughes pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three hits and three earned runs. He struck out six to take the decision. Neal pitched to the final two hitters, allowing one hit and a walk. Each team had four hits. Neal was 1-for-4 with a run, while Morris was 1-for-3. Giant was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Gauthier was 1-for-1 with an RBI double. The Dragons are now 13-8 on the season and and 5-5 in HHC play. The two teams meet again Wednesday at New Palestine.
