Zach Holmes scored a brace, leading the New Palestine boys soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Southport Tuesday at NPHS. The victory was the Dragons' second straight win. Holmes got the Dragons on the board in the 12th minute, taking a long feed from midfield, then dribbling past a drawn-out keeper and tucking the ball in from the left side of the box. The Dragons had a chance to extend the lead minutes later when Noah Diaz De Leon drew a penalty, but Southport's keeper stopped the penalty kick. Southport drew level in the 25th minute, with a long free kick from midfield going to the goalmouth, where it was headed in. The teams were even 1-1 at the break. In the second half, the Dragons had a 62nd-minute chance when Quade Bloomer drew the keeper out and fired far post, but it went inches wide. Two minutes later, the Dragons again had the ball in the attacking third. A ball was sent into the mixer in the box. Holmes won a ball and sent it into the far-post netting to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead. Camden Brown and the Dragons' defense saw it out despite a heavy Southport push in the final 15 minutes. The Dragons are now 3-8 on the season and have won two straight games. They next play Thursday at home against Greenfield-Central. The Dragons JV dropped a 3-2 game. Harrison Lindell and Elliot Hillebrand tallied the Dragons' goals.
