Softball posts Senior Day shutout

The New Palestine softball team honored its seniors Saturday and sent them off with a 10-0 shutout of Connersville in their final regular season game. The Dragons jumped ahead 6-0 after two innings and triggered the mercy rule in the sixth, clinching a 22-4 regular season record. The first inning saw Katie Hirschy reach on a two-out single and score on an error. Amber Hurt singled home another run. In the second, Kylee Beranek led off with a double. Lauren Wagoner reached on an error .Jersi Gross delivered an RBI double and Payton Dye an RBI single on back-to-back batters. Hirschy drove in another run with an RBI groundout, and Hurt added an RBI single for the Dragons' fourth hit and fourth run of the frame. NP added two more runs in the fifth, as Catherine Trebley and Wagoner delivered back-to-back RBI doubles. In the sixth, Lyndsay Goodin and Callie Cromwell hit back-to-back doubles to end the game. The Dragons outhit Connersville 13-3. Sadey Hughbanks pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing three hits and striking out three. Hurt was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Trebley 2-for-3 with a double. Cromwell was 2-for-2 with a double, a run and an RBI. Gross was 1-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Dye was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Hirschy was 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Engle was 1-for-4 with two runs. Goodin was 1-for-1 with a double, a run and an RBI. Beranek was 1-for-3 with a double and a run. Wagoner was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. The Dragons open sectional play at home at 10 a.m. Monday against Beech Grove.
